As I continue struggling as a writer, hoping for fame and fortune, I have added another adventure to my career. Not only do I write for my followers here on Medium — who, by the way, have significantly grown in number in just a few short months — but I have also embarked on writing my first horror/thriller novel, which is a far cry from the children’s books I have written but not published.

In February of this year, my life was struck with tragedy. My beloved godson passed away unexpectedly, and since his family was from the other side of the country, it was placed upon me to plan the services.

As I walked into the office of the daily newspaper with a wrinkled piece of paper stained with salty tears, I began to sense that not only was my godson with me in writing his obituary, but he must have been with me in spirit, too. He knew how much I love to write, and the idea of becoming a journalist for the office I was walking into popped into my head, along with his words. “Hey, Ma! Here is your chance.”

I attended my first weekly staff meeting, and the general manager assigned me the task of contacting and interviewing a local established author…
